Book Review – The Accidental Necromancer by Liv Rancourt

Subpar Heroes
Publisher: Rancourt Publishing
Pages: 185
Characters: Brandon/Stefanos
POV: 3rd
Genre: Contemporary, Paranormal, Series

Blurb:
Last Year—yes, it was so bad it needs to be capitalized—continues to haunt Brandon. A fresh start in a new town should have been the solution, but the memories follow him everywhere, in the form of undead roadkill he can’t seem to stop conjuring.

And Brandon’s growing posthumous pet problem is attracting attention. At least Stefanos, the paranormal veterinarian who offers to help him, is cute.

Who even knew paranormal veterinarians were a thing?

The resurrected animals are bad, but the wraith who starts dogging—pun intended—Brandon’s every step is far, far worse. This unwilling necromancer will have to figure out how to put Last Year behind him if he ever wants to find peace in the warm and willing veterinarian’s bed.

The Accidental Necromancer is a part of the multi-author Sub-Par Superheroes MM romance series. This book is set in the same world as The Richmond Vampire, though it features different characters. Mack and Bellafleure will be back in an upcoming book, because there’s definitely more to their story!

Review

I enjoyed this paranormal story with its flawed heroes, and fabulous world building. I liked Brandon and Stef, and that they’re both reluctantly involved with things that go bump. I loved Sparky and how she slowly becomes more than an undead cat.

liked the idea of a necromancer who has no clue how he’s resurrecting the dead as his menagerie of undead animals keeps growing. Brandon is a very endearing character who carries a lot of guilt. I like how he grows during the course of the story, both in character and power.

Stef’s patients are… interesting. I liked that, although he does good in the community, he has flaws he’s well aware of, and that knowing he has anger issues doesn’t make them magically go away. I liked his and Brandon’s growing relationship and how he lets Brandon move forward at his own pace.

The supporting cast are a mixed bag of fun, evil, and everything in between. I liked Layla, but April and the SPAM lot are manipulative and a little too full of themselves at times. I loved the world building with its slightly different take on some of the paranormals.

The plot moves at a decent pace, and reads the same way. I liked that it wasn’t easy to take down the bad guy, and the help they get is very cool, especially with the way it provides some closure.

I’m looking forward to reading more set in this world.

5 out of 5 stars.

About Anne Barwell

Anne Barwell lives in Wellington, New Zealand. She shares her home with a cat with “tortitude” who is convinced that the house is run to suit her; this is an ongoing “discussion,” and to date, it appears as though Kaylee may be winning. In 2008, Anne completed her conjoint BA in English Literature and Music/Bachelor of Teaching. She has worked as a music teacher, a primary school teacher, and now works in a library. She is a member of the Upper Hutt Science Fiction Club and plays violin for Hutt Valley Orchestra. She is an avid reader across a wide range of genres and a watcher of far too many TV series and movies, although it can be argued that there is no such thing as “too many.” These, of course, are best enjoyed with a decent cup of tea and further the continuing argument that the concept of “spare time” is really just a myth. She also hosts and reviews for other authors, and writes monthly blog posts for Love Bytes. She is the co-founder of the New Zealand Rainbow Romance writers, and a member of RWNZ. Anne’s books have received honorable mentions five times, reached the finals four times—one of which was for best gay book—and been a runner up in the Rainbow Awards. She has also been nominated twice in the Goodreads M/M Romance Reader’s Choice Awards—once for Best Fantasy and once for Best Historical. Anne can be found at https://annebarwell.wordpress.com
