“The area is a mix of open farmland and forest. Where would you aim for if you were a pilot with an aircraft you knew couldn’t stay airborne for much longer?”
“It would depend how much control I had over it and whether the rest of the crew had already bailed out. An open space might make for a safer landing, but it’s also more exposed, and he’d have to find somewhere fairly flat among all these hills.” Michel pointed to an area south of their location. “Does that look like smoke to you?”
Kit peered in the direction Michel was pointing. “Yes,” he said, “I think it is.” A thin spiral of black smoke rose into the sky in the near distance. “How long do you think that will take to reach?”
“It’s hard to say; it depends on the terrain. If it is the aircraft, it seems to have come down in the middle of the forest. I hope the pilot found a decent-sized clearing, or there’s not going to be much of him and his crew or the plane left to worry about.” Michel shuddered at the thought.
Kit watched the smoke with interest. He glanced at his watch. “Of course, if the crew did survive and aren’t too badly injured, they could already be heading towards us.”
“Ever the optimist.” Michel didn’t want to stay in the forest any longer than was necessary when they were so close to reaching the safe house in Freudenstadt.
“If I let myself lose hope, I’m back in that dark place reliving my nightmares,” said Kit quietly. “I won’t let that happen again.”
