Teaser Tuesday – 18/1/22 – Family and Reflection

This week’s #teasertuesday is from Family and Reflection, book 3 of The Sleepless City series I wrote with Elizabeth Noble.

“There’s nothing else. If I find out anything further, I’ll let you know.” Anita cocked her head to one side. She closed the folder he’d given her and slid it across the table to him. “You need to go.”

“But I—” Lucas heard the screech of brakes outside. Damn it. She’d obviously recognized the sound of the vehicle before it had gotten as far as the driveway. Sure, he’d heard cars going past, but they were on a suburban street, so it was kind of a given that there would be.

“Randall’s home.” Anita confirmed his suspicions.

The front door opened, then slammed shut. Lucas picked up his folder. He wasn’t about to leave the reports there for Randall to read. “Bye,” he said. “Thanks for the coffee.”

“What the hell are you doing here?” Randall snarled as he stalked into the kitchen. “I thought I recognized your Jeep out front but hoped I was wrong.”

“You’ve got to be right occasionally,” Lucas muttered. “Nice to see you again, Randall, but can’t stay and chat. Sorry.” He made a point of giving Anita a peck on the cheek. “Great to see you again. It’s been too long.”

“Not long enough.” Randall growled, showing teeth, and his eyes glowed yellow.

Lucas growled back. He wasn’t in the mood for this shit. “Still working on figuring out how to roll out the welcome wagon, I see.”

“Lucas! Randall!” Anita stepped between them. “This is my home. Sort out your differences somewhere else.”

“You heard her,” Randall said. “This is our home.” His teeth extended into points, his face sprouting hair that definitely hadn’t been there a few moments before.

“I was just leaving.” Lucas didn’t bother to wait around for Anita to smooth over the situation. She’d be more likely to throw both of them out until they calmed down. Or worse still, take Randall’s side in the matter.

Why the hell had she agreed to marry that idiot? Oh yeah, something about someone having to continue the Coate line if Lucas wasn’t going to.

About Anne Barwell

Anne Barwell lives in Wellington, New Zealand. She shares her home with a cat with “tortitude” who is convinced that the house is run to suit her; this is an ongoing “discussion,” and to date, it appears as though Kaylee may be winning. In 2008, Anne completed her conjoint BA in English Literature and Music/Bachelor of Teaching. She has worked as a music teacher, a primary school teacher, and now works in a library. She is a member of the Upper Hutt Science Fiction Club and plays violin for Hutt Valley Orchestra. She is an avid reader across a wide range of genres and a watcher of far too many TV series and movies, although it can be argued that there is no such thing as “too many.” These, of course, are best enjoyed with a decent cup of tea and further the continuing argument that the concept of “spare time” is really just a myth. She also hosts and reviews for other authors, and writes monthly blog posts for Love Bytes. She is the co-founder of the New Zealand Rainbow Romance writers, and a member of RWNZ. Anne’s books have received honorable mentions five times, reached the finals four times—one of which was for best gay book—and been a runner up in the Rainbow Awards. She has also been nominated twice in the Goodreads M/M Romance Reader’s Choice Awards—once for Best Fantasy and once for Best Historical. Anne can be found at https://annebarwell.wordpress.com
