This week’s #teasertuesday is from Family and Reflection, book 3 of The Sleepless City series I wrote with Elizabeth Noble.
“I’ve already said I’d come quietly. Give me a moment to get my coat.” Declan glanced at Lucas. There wouldn’t be any reading of rights. The council had its own brand of justice and law, but even so, technically this was still an arrest. “What are the charges?”
“Theft of council property,” Alfred said, “for starters.” The two men with him hadn’t said a word but instead left all the talking to Alfred. Enforcers weren’t known for their wit and conversational skills. Alfred, however, clearly loved his job, but that wasn’t a surprise.
Declan grabbed his coat and brushed briefly against Lucas on the way back to the open door. “Phone Jonas and Simon,” he hissed in Lucas’s ear. “I have a really bad feeling about this. Please don’t follow me. I don’t want you dragged into this any more than you already are. I’ll be the one paying for this, not you.”
He walked out the door and was gone.
Lucas grabbed his phone and punched in Forge’s number. “You have to come home,” he said when Forge picked up. “The council’s come for Declan. They think he stole something from them last night. If we don’t get him out of there, he’s screwed.”
