Because I Want To by Grace R. Duncan

A big welcome to Grace R. Duncan as part of her new release Because I Want To.

Adam’s fears of pairing are valid, but if he doesn’t get past them, he’ll lose his best friend’s love forever.

About Because I Want To

Omega Adam and Alpha Matt have been best friends all their lives. Matt has been there for Adam from his first heat. They’ve never been apart and Adam has never considered being with another person. So, it confuses Matt when Adam refuses to allow Matt to bite and pair with him.

Adam has seen for himself what happens when an alpha leaves his paired omega, when his mother went through the excruciating pain of a new alpha bite. Knowing his best friend as well as he does, he knows that if Matt ever bit and paired with him, Matt would never leave and consign Adam to the pain of a new bite or a life without sex. But Adam knows that it wouldn’t matter how Matt felt, he’d stay even if he felt trapped by the situation, making them both miserable and hurting Matt badly.

When Adam finds himself pregnant with Matt’s baby, he panics. All his attempts to keep Matt from getting trapped have been useless. With no idea what to do, he ends up hurting Matt anyway. If he doesn’t come to terms soon with his fears, he could find himself completely alone and losing the only person he’s ever loved.

An Excerpt from Because I Want To
Difficult. Damned near brutal. Matt wasn’t sure there was a word serious enough to describe how Adam’s heat was going.

They were on day four, with no sign of it dissipating. If anything, it was getting worse. Matt was almost worried enough to take Adam to the hospital, but there wasn’t much they could do except possibly administer a much stronger type of suppressant. And getting Adam there would be… complicated, at best.

He couldn’t remember one being quite this bad. It might have been the time Matt had run out of his own suppressant. He’d been so messed up, though, he might not have realized how bad it was for Adam.

Both Matt and Adam were exhausted. It seemed like all they’d done since Adam’s heat started was either have sex or sleep, with a few moments for eating thrown in here and there. It wasn’t quite that bad, but it sure felt like it.

Matt propped his head on his hand and stared at the man next to him. Adam slept peacefully—for the moment—curled on his side, facing Matt. His legs were against Matt’s, their feet tangled together, and his blond hair made a messy halo around his face. Matt’s heart thudded as he took in Adam’s gorgeous features. Despite the messy hair, open mouth, and even a little drool on his lips, he was still beautiful to Matt.

Reaching out, Matt brushed the blond hair back, then leaned over and left a soft kiss on Adam’s temple. He closed his eyes and let himself take a deep inhale of the scent. Adam’s pheromones hit him, making his already-hard cock jump. He’d been like that since he woke a short while before. Despite the added arousal, he couldn’t resist taking in all of Adam.

Adam was just as hard. Matt suspected it wouldn’t be long before he woke up and needed help again. His suppressant wasn’t doing a damned thing for him this time, so it didn’t really matter when he’d taken it last. Even the injectable wasn’t doing much good.

Almost as if Adam’s body read Matt’s mind, Adam started to stir. He opened his eyes, blinking away sleep, and smiled. God, Matt wanted that smile to mean more than it did. He pushed that thought away and focused on the more important matter at the moment.

“How are you feeling?”

About Anne Barwell

Anne Barwell lives in Wellington, New Zealand. She shares her home with a cat with “tortitude” who is convinced that the house is run to suit her; this is an ongoing “discussion,” and to date, it appears as though Kaylee may be winning. In 2008, Anne completed her conjoint BA in English Literature and Music/Bachelor of Teaching. She has worked as a music teacher, a primary school teacher, and now works in a library. She is a member of the Upper Hutt Science Fiction Club and plays violin for Hutt Valley Orchestra. She is an avid reader across a wide range of genres and a watcher of far too many TV series and movies, although it can be argued that there is no such thing as “too many.” These, of course, are best enjoyed with a decent cup of tea and further the continuing argument that the concept of “spare time” is really just a myth. She also hosts and reviews for other authors, and writes monthly blog posts for Love Bytes. She is the co-founder of the New Zealand Rainbow Romance writers, and a member of RWNZ. Anne’s books have received honorable mentions five times, reached the finals four times—one of which was for best gay book—and been a runner up in the Rainbow Awards. She has also been nominated twice in the Goodreads M/M Romance Reader’s Choice Awards—once for Best Fantasy and once for Best Historical. Anne can be found at
