Book Review & Tour – The Selkie’s Coat by Drea Roman

A big welcome to Drea Roman as part of her tour with Gay Romance Review Tours for The Selkie’s Coat.

Review

I’m usually not a fan of present tense but by the time I’d read a paragraph of this story I didn’t notice what tense it was written in. I got pulled into Gregory and Daniel’s story and invested in their characters very quickly, and had a couple of very late nights reading as I had to find out what happened next and make sure they got their HEA.

The world building also caught my imagination right from the word go. I love the set up with supernaturals living alongside humans, and both aware of the other. I loved Gregory and Daniel’s world, and the rich history and culture of the selkie society. I liked how the omegas fit into that, and that although they can get pregnant and go into heat, it doesn’t define who they are. I loved how the author flipped the usual tropes with Daniel is feisty, capable and gives as good as he gets, and Gregory being a sweet guy who is more marshmellow than alpha. I loved the passion between them, and how both of them try to fight the mate bond for different reasons. The relationship between Gregory and his selkie and how that is resolved was a highlight of the story.

I supporting cast is fabulous and add to the feeling of stepping into a fully formed world. I’m looking forward to reading more about Winston and Henri. They’re both such great characters, and I particularly liked quirky Henri. I hope he gets his own HEA. I also liked Josh and hope he gets his own story too. Gregory’s mother is a force to be reckoned with. Her scenes were funny and embarrassing at the same time. I like how Daniel’s mother has thrown herself into research about omegas, and how both families support their children.

This is a new to me author, and I’m so pleased I picked up this book. I’m already hanging out for the next in the series. 5 out 5 stars.

The Selkie's Coat Final Cover

Waves of Fate, Book 1

A marshmallow alpha with more heart than sense and a stubborn human omega trying to guard his heart fall in love in this first story from the Waves of Fate omegaverse.

“Oops! You dropped your coat!” With these words, waiter Daniel Collins turns alpha selkie Gregory Samson’s life upside down. Because that coat is not some fancy heirloom fur. No, it is Gregory’s selkie pelt, which magically connects him with his seal animal inside.

When Gregory hears Daniel’ voice, he knows the rare human omega is his mate. Too bad Daniel has more than a few misgivings about trusting his heart to a selkie. Because the magical seal shifters have one of the worst player reputations of all shifter kind and Daniel fears a broken heart. How will Gregory convince Daniel to give him a chance?

It wouldn’t be so hard if Gregory’s mother and everyone else would just stop meddling!

Brought together by the magic of Gregory’s coat, can the pair weather insecurities, an interfering mother, meddling friends, and a disgruntled inner animal?

The Selkie’s Coat is book 1 of the Waves of Fate Omegaverse. It can be read as a standalone.

Excerpt:

From Chapter 6: Gregory

“Can selkies tell time underwater?”

I nearly choke on the water I just sipped and barely manage not to spew it across the table. “What?” I cough out as I wipe my mouth.

“Sorry, wasn’t trying to choke you.”

“Why would selkies need to tell time underwater?” The corners of my mouth tug into a genuine smile. “Are you trying to tell me a selkie joke?”

I am thrilled with the idea my mate wants to joke with me, especially considering how disastrously our interactions have gone since our decidedly “meet-cute,” this wonderful lunch aside. Internally, I sigh at myself. “Meet-cute” indeed, if that involved one’s mother interfering and several near-calamitous misunderstandings.

Daniel cocks his head and studies me a second with serious eyes. Then the smile I longed for without knowing it spreads across his face, and I fall a little more for the sweet charms of my all-too-serious omega. “No, are there selkie jokes?”

At my nod, he leans forward, and I mirror the movement, bringing us a smidge closer over the table.

“Like what?” His voice is a whisper now like we are sharing childhood secrets. I wrack my mind for any scrap of memory, but the only thing my short-circuiting brain provides is a terribly lame knock-knock joke. But with Daniel looking at me expectantly, with an open expression instead of the guarded one I have been favored with several times this afternoon, I go for broke.

Grinning, I wink at him before ruining any chance I have of him not seeing me as a dork.

“Knock, knock.”

“Who’s there?” Daniel dutifully responds.

“Sealed.”

“Sealed who?”

“Sealed with a kiss. Smack. Smack.” I make a kissy face and noise, turning my head from side to side as if kissing a friend on the cheeks.

Daniel looks shocked a moment, then bursts out laughing. I savor the sound, and my selkie curls up in the warmth of it.

About Anne Barwell

Anne Barwell lives in Wellington, New Zealand. She shares her home with a cat with “tortitude” who is convinced that the house is run to suit her; this is an ongoing “discussion,” and to date, it appears as though Kaylee may be winning. In 2008, Anne completed her conjoint BA in English Literature and Music/Bachelor of Teaching. She has worked as a music teacher, a primary school teacher, and now works in a library. She is a member of the Upper Hutt Science Fiction Club and plays violin for Hutt Valley Orchestra. She is an avid reader across a wide range of genres and a watcher of far too many TV series and movies, although it can be argued that there is no such thing as “too many.” These, of course, are best enjoyed with a decent cup of tea and further the continuing argument that the concept of “spare time” is really just a myth. She also hosts and reviews for other authors, and writes monthly blog posts for Love Bytes. She is the co-founder of the New Zealand Rainbow Romance writers, and a member of RWNZ. Anne’s books have received honorable mentions five times, reached the finals four times—one of which was for best gay book—and been a runner up in the Rainbow Awards. She has also been nominated twice in the Goodreads M/M Romance Reader’s Choice Awards—once for Best Fantasy and once for Best Historical. Anne can be found at https://annebarwell.wordpress.com
