Review – Devotion

I loved the world building in this story, and the little details that made everything feel so real, like the fact that the wolves don’t like to fly as it makes them feel trapped. I liked the way the wolf shifters were written, with human and wolf separate entities, yet a part of the whole that makes up each person. It’s obvious the author has put a lot of thought into the wolves, their history, myths, and beliefs. I thought the telepathic bond between a fully mated/claimed couple was cool, and that the wolves don’t see in colour.

Finley and Tanner are both interesting characters. I could feel Finley’s frustration with Tanner, yet could understand why Tanner was cautious too.

I liked the family vibe within the pack too, and how everyone works together to help each other out. I particularly liked Jamie, and am very pleased that his book is next. Tanner’s mother is wonderful as she’s very upfront and says what she thinks.

The settings felt very real, and I had very clear visuals as I was reading.

The author’s writing style made this a very easy, smooth read, and I got hooked into the story very quickly, and kept turning pages to make sure these guys got their happy ending.

5 out of 5. More please.

Will Tanner realize he’s wrong and claim his mate before Finley’s devotion is gone?

Finley Cooper is tired of waiting for his destined mate to be ready to claim him. In deference to human laws, he’s already agreed to wait until he’s eighteen. But now his birthday has come and gone—and his mate has a new set of excuses. Finley doesn’t understand it any more than his wolf does, and he’s beginning to wonder if fate made a mistake.

Tanner Pearce wants nothing more than to claim his mate, but he worries that Finley is too young. Tanner will never forget what happened when his best friend mated at Finley’s age, only to have that mate end up feeling trapped and breaking their bond. While rare, it can happen, and the fallout Tanner witnessed as his best friend tried to deal with the break has haunted him for years.

When Finley finally has enough, he threatens to find someone who will claim him if Tanner doesn’t, and Tanner realizes he needs to come to terms with his fears or risk losing his mate forever.

Excerpt
Finley sighed and rolled over in the previously too-empty bed, burrowing into Tanner’s arms. “Mmmm. Welcome back.”

Tanner chuckled, kissing the top of Finley’s head. “Is that all I’m going to get?”

“Maybe,” Finley replied, then ruined it by kissing his way up along Tanner’s chest and neck.

This earned him another chuckle, but then Tanner rolled them until Finley was under him. He caught Finley’s lips in a long, hard kiss, scrambling Finley’s brains in no time. Finley moaned, rocking up, his awakened cock grinding into Tanner’s equally hard length.

“That’s more like it,” Tanner whispered then dove in, leaving harsh, arousing bites over Finley’s chest. Finley whimpered because it wasn’t enough, not nearly. He pushed his fingers through Tanner’s thick, red hair and tried to guide him where he was needed—Finley’s cock.

Tanner, of course, had no intention of giving in that easily. He grasped Finley’s wrists and pinned them over his mate’s head, grinning down at the scowl. Finley struggled half-heartedly, but of course, the scowl faded and lust took its place.

“You want this, I know you do,” Tanner murmured, tightening his hand briefly on Finley’s wrists.

Finley moaned, but nodded, wrapping his legs around Tanner’s waist. He couldn’t deny it; it’d been the fantasy rolling around in his head since he and Tanner had finally claimed each other. If he was honest with himself, it’d been there even before that.

“Legs down, pup,” Tanner growled and Finley complied, but couldn’t stop the small whine as he did. The alpha in Tanner was firmly in the forefront, making Finley’s dick twitch and precum spurt.

“Please, alpha…”

“Mmmm,” was Tanner’s only reply and Finley knew he was getting exactly what he wanted—to experience every bit of Tanner’s alpha-ness, every bit of the dominance Tanner held under the surface, that he’d held back when they’d been making love.

Finley didn’t mind that, most of the time. But he’d been fantasizing and dreaming about Tanner letting go of that control for a while now. He wanted, maybe even needed, to know what it was like to be on the receiving end of that dominance. It’d been filling his dreams even more as of late.

Tanner rocked, dragging his hard cock along Finley’s, teasing Finley with the reminder he was so firmly in control. Finley whimpered, not caring one bit if that’s what it was, knowing Tanner appreciated hearing it. He tried to meet Tanner’s movements, but that just made Tanner stop, making Finley whine. They’d barely started and Finley thought he was going to explode already, he was so aroused. Precum slicked their cocks, making the slide even more delicious, though still not enough.

“Want something, pup?” Tanner asked, chuckling darkly.

Finley fought this whimper, but gave in. Just because he wanted the dominance didn’t mean he wanted to automatically give in and do what Tanner wanted. He rocked again, but Tanner moved, placing his hand on Finley’s hip and holding him still.

This brought another full whine. “Tell me, pup,” Tanner murmured. “Tell me what you want.”

“Want…” Finley groaned, dick jumping, balls already wanting to empty and he’d barely been touched. “Want you to fuck me.”

“Mmm. That I might be able to do.”

Finley let out a breath of relief.

“When I’m ready to.”

That was not a cry. He wasn’t that far gone. Nope, not at all.

Tanner chuckled again and Finley knew that, while he might be fooling himself, he wasn’t fooling his mate. Not one bit. “Please, alpha… please…”

His mate gave in… a little… and rolled his hips, sliding that delicious cock along Finley’s. Finley’s moan came out loud, spurring Tanner on and bringing more of those lovely thrusts. “I’ll fuck you, pup, fuck you so hard you can’t even remember your name, knot you until you lose your mind,” Tanner promised in his deep, alpha voice.

Finley let loose with another whimper, toes curling into the sheets.

“But not until I’m home. Soon, pup… soon.”

The sound of The Proclaimers “I’m Gonna Be” broke into Finley’s mind and he sat up fast, rubbing his eyes. He groaned when he realized he’d been dreaming. Again. He rolled over and snatched the phone off the bedside table and stabbed at the green Answer button. “Tanner?”

“Hi baby. How are you?”

“Fucking horny,” Finley answered before he could stop himself.

Tanner chuckled. “That goes for two of us. I miss you. I should be home from the alpha conference later today, though. I can help you take care of that.”

Finley sighed. “I was dreaming about you when you called.”

“Oh, really? The same one?”

Finley refused to name the sound that came out, but managed to say, “Yes.”

“I think maybe it’s time I fulfilled that little fantasy.”

Finley froze, his breath caught in his chest. “Really?”

“Yeah, really. So… I’d bet your cock is hard now, isn’t it?”

“Yes,” Finley answered on barely a breath of sound.

“Good. Leave it like that. Don’t touch it, except to clean it. I want you plenty horny for me later.” The alpha tone went straight to said cock, making it jump, making it even harder.

He did whimper this time, enough to draw a dark chuckle out of Tanner. A moment later, though, Tanner said, “If you don’t want to…”

“I know. I know how to say no, how to stop it,” Finley replied quietly.

“Good, then…”

“I’ll leave it. I won’t touch myself.”

“Mmm. Good pup.” He let that sit for a moment. “I love you, baby.”

“Love you, Tanner. I miss you.”

“Miss you. I’ll be home this afternoon. Can’t wait to see you.”

“Can’t wait to see you too.”

“And get in your ass.”

Finley whimpered again as Tanner chuckled then hung up.

About Anne Barwell

Anne Barwell lives in Wellington, New Zealand. She shares her home with a cat with “tortitude” who is convinced that the house is run to suit her; this is an ongoing “discussion,” and to date, it appears as though Kaylee may be winning. In 2008, Anne completed her conjoint BA in English Literature and Music/Bachelor of Teaching. She has worked as a music teacher, a primary school teacher, and now works in a library. She is a member of the Upper Hutt Science Fiction Club and plays violin for Hutt Valley Orchestra. She is an avid reader across a wide range of genres and a watcher of far too many TV series and movies, although it can be argued that there is no such thing as “too many.” These, of course, are best enjoyed with a decent cup of tea and further the continuing argument that the concept of “spare time” is really just a myth. She also hosts and reviews for other authors, and writes monthly blog posts for Love Bytes. She is the co-founder of the New Zealand Rainbow Romance writers, and a member of RWNZ. Anne’s books have received honorable mentions five times, reached the finals four times—one of which was for best gay book—and been a runner up in the Rainbow Awards. She has also been nominated twice in the Goodreads M/M Romance Reader’s Choice Awards—once for Best Fantasy and once for Best Historical. Anne can be found at https://annebarwell.wordpress.com
