Tour & Book Review – The Good Green Earth by V.L. Locey

A big welcome to V.L. Locey as part of her tour with Signal Boost Promotions for The Good Green Earth.

Review

I got pulled into this story very quickly and became invested in Nate a couple of pages in, despite thinking he needed to lose his attitude. I figured early on that there was a story behind Bran’s cool demeanour. I enjoyed reading about his and Nate’s mutual attraction and slow building friendship. Given Nate’s past, I could well understand why he had difficulty staying away from alcohol. Both he and Bran are hurting, and not coping in different ways. I thought the author did a great job in revealing their backgrounds and personalities as the story progressed.

I loved the supporting cast too. Maggie, in particular, is great. She’s quirky, yet caring, and I liked the way she helped Nate to open up by asking about his tats. He really is quite clueless about gardening. I loved Dixie too. She’s very smart, yet empathetic, and straight up about both Bran and Nate needing to ‘sort their shit out’. On the flip side, Nate’s brother is a totally unpleasant guy, and came across well as just that.

I liked that Bran being Nate’s boss as he works out his community service was brought up, and why that would be problematic moving forward. I also thought it felt realistic that Bran would feel guilty for dating again. I like relationships that are equal, and I enjoyed that both men are fragile and damaged for different reasons, and are able to support each other.

The characters and setting felt very real. I found myself sitting up late, and turning pages, needing to know what happened next.

I’d recommend this feel good story to readers who enjoy a slow burn romance with damaged characters who struggle to regain their emotional strength, and grow a strong friendship along with their relationship. 5 out of 5 stars.

After the Syracuse Stallions clinch the championship, Nathan Zinkan, the renowned wild man of the AHL is arrested for a DUI. Again. When a no-nonsense judge adds a heavy dose of community service to an already stiff sentence, Nathan has to forget a summer of partying and slide on a pair of gardening gloves. His entire future now rides on how well he can behave while helping elderly urban gardeners tend to their tomatoes.

Watching local garden center owner Bran Cavanaugh working without his shirt is a benefit he wasn’t expecting. Pity Bran is also the one in charge of the community garden as well as keeping tabs on Nathan’s hours served. The two men are instantly at odds due to Nathan’s rebellious nature and Bran’s icy demeanor. Yet there’s no denying the attraction that begins to build between the hot-headed athlete and the cool as a cucumber master gardener.

Will their attraction grow into something deeper, or will it wither and die on the vine?

About Anne Barwell

Anne Barwell lives in Wellington, New Zealand. She shares her home with a cat with “tortitude” who is convinced that the house is run to suit her; this is an ongoing “discussion,” and to date, it appears as though Kaylee may be winning. In 2008, Anne completed her conjoint BA in English Literature and Music/Bachelor of Teaching. She has worked as a music teacher, a primary school teacher, and now works in a library. She is a member of the Upper Hutt Science Fiction Club and plays violin for Hutt Valley Orchestra. She is an avid reader across a wide range of genres and a watcher of far too many TV series and movies, although it can be argued that there is no such thing as “too many.” These, of course, are best enjoyed with a decent cup of tea and further the continuing argument that the concept of “spare time” is really just a myth. She also hosts and reviews for other authors, and writes monthly blog posts for Love Bytes. She is the co-founder of the New Zealand Rainbow Romance writers, and a member of RWNZ. Anne’s books have received honorable mentions five times, reached the finals four times—one of which was for best gay book—and been a runner up in the Rainbow Awards. She has also been nominated twice in the Goodreads M/M Romance Reader’s Choice Awards—once for Best Fantasy and once for Best Historical. Anne can be found at https://annebarwell.wordpress.com
