A big welcome to Joanna Chambers as part of her review tour with Signal Boost Promotions for Mr Winterbourne’s Christmas.
Review
Mr Winterbourne’s Christmas is a feel good historical story of two men in love, yet doesn’t skirt the issues of loving another man in that time period. The historical setting set very real, and I felt as though I could be reading an Austen-like story, apart from the main characters being two men. I loved the way the story uses tropes from Regency romance novels and gives them a different twist.
Adam and Lysander complement each other well, and although the sex between them is wonderful, I liked that they both make a point of knowing there is a difference between lust and love. I also liked that they each had doubts about the other’s love, yet it was more of a reflection of their own self-doubt.
The supporting cast are very three dimensional. I particularly loved Lysander’s Great-aunt Maud, who is far more clued up than people think. I thought Percy was very sweet, and I hope he gets his own HEA at some point. I was very amused by the epilogue, and hope we see more of this series, and these characters.
I thought the author did a great job in reflecting the class system, and especially the attitude of those born into money toward those who have achieved wealth through hard work. Lysander’s father is such a snob!
I guessed some of the plot, but that didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the story. Neither did not having read the first in the series, although I now need to go back and play catch up as I want to read about Adam and Lysander’s first meeting.
I’d recommend Mr Winterbourne’s Christmas to readers who enjoy a light romantic historical story which reflects the sensibilities of the time in which it’s set, with interesting endearing characters. 5 out of 5 stars.
Lysander Winterbourne has been living happily at Edgeley Park for the last eighteen months. By day he is Adam Freeman’s estate manager, by night, his lover…but Adam never speaks of his feelings and Lysander has no idea whether their relationship is any more than a convenient arrangement for Adam.
