Series Review Tour – Shadow Unit by Jamie Lynn Miller

A big welcome to Jamie Lynn Miller as part of her series review tour with Signal Boost Promotions for Shadow Unit.

Review – Book 1 – Broken Soldier

I liked the characters in this story, and appreciated that the Shadow Unit team was made up of a mix of men and women, and that the women kicked arse as well as the men. I thought the action scenes were well written, and the author does a great job in raising the tension of Shawn’s undercover mission. The story isn’t a light read, but I think that is one of its strengths. I also liked the way in which Shawn and Connor’s relationship up to the present is told through flashbacks, and how Shawn uses those flashbacks. I thought Connor’s helplessness and despair watching Shawn sink lower and lower came across very well.

However, I did have a few issues with the way ‘the mission comes first’ was taken to the extreme. In saying that, though, I thought the way in which the resulting addiction was dealt with felt very realistic. I also liked the way in which Shawn convinces himself that he is on top of the addiction, and yet it still comes across that deep down he knows he’s in trouble.

The bad guy is a total arsehole, and I really felt for Shawn having to pretend he wanted to be with him. Ick. And while I loved Shawn, Connor and the other members of their team, I had reservations about their commanding officer, especially considering the team had already lost one of its members in a previous mission. I had to dispel my disbelief that he would allow things to get as far as they did with the drugs.

All in all, I did found this story to be a good read, although there is a little too much sex for my taste, and I’d like to see where further adventures take these characters.

I’d recommend Broken Soldier to readers who like a dark story with interesting characters, and a plot that keeps you on the edge of your reading seat. 4 out of 5 stars.

Author Bio

Jamie Lynn Miller has been writing fiction since childhood and decided to take the plunge and go pro in 2008, finding to her amazement that people truly enjoyed her love stories. She’s a romantic at heart, and her tales reflect the desire we all have to find “the one,” persevering through trials and heartache for that happy ending.

Jamie has a degree in fine arts and has spent the last twenty years working as a graphic designer, though she’d much rather be writing. She was born in Chicago and still lives there today with her husband and their two furry, four-footed children, er… cats.

If she’s not brainstorming story ideas, you can find Jamie at a sci-fi convention, in front of a furnace doing glass blowing, or on a mat twisted into a yoga pose.

About Anne Barwell

Anne Barwell lives in Wellington, New Zealand. She shares her home with a cat with “tortitude” who is convinced that the house is run to suit her; this is an ongoing “discussion,” and to date, it appears as though Kaylee may be winning. In 2008, Anne completed her conjoint BA in English Literature and Music/Bachelor of Teaching. She has worked as a music teacher, a primary school teacher, and now works in a library. She is a member of the Upper Hutt Science Fiction Club and plays violin for Hutt Valley Orchestra. She is an avid reader across a wide range of genres and a watcher of far too many TV series and movies, although it can be argued that there is no such thing as “too many.” These, of course, are best enjoyed with a decent cup of tea and further the continuing argument that the concept of “spare time” is really just a myth. She also hosts and reviews for other authors, and writes monthly blog posts for Love Bytes. She is the co-founder of the New Zealand Rainbow Romance writers, and a member of RWNZ. Anne’s books have received honorable mentions five times, reached the finals four times—one of which was for best gay book—and been a runner up in the Rainbow Awards. She has also been nominated twice in the Goodreads M/M Romance Reader’s Choice Awards—once for Best Fantasy and once for Best Historical. Anne can be found at https://annebarwell.wordpress.com
